Metamorphosis Monday - vintage footstool!

I have an awesome metamorphosis this week!

At "junk day", in a little town north of here, we found this footstool along the curb. The fabric was in perfect condition, although a bit out of style. My DH thought it would take some work, but would be pretty again, with out help!

Torn apart, it needed a lot of TLC - but the bones were good. Even the springs were individually wrapped.

DH had a some major glue and nails business to attend to, but it worked!

The cotton looks awful, but it just had a little rust on it. I wanted to reuse it though, it fit

perfectly.

It's beginning to look better already. The next step though, we were wondering how to make a clean, straight line at the top.

So, we took a yard stick and split it in half length ways, then cut it to fit the sides. Amazing as it seems - it was exactly 72" around the stool, so it fit perfectly.

I hot glued the fabric to the stick...........

Then tacked the stick to the stool. We tried using a staple gun, but the wood filler was too hard, so we ended up using the air powered nail gun. Then, turned it upside down and tacked it down. I went around the edged with the glue gun to make sure everything was going to stay in place.

The final step with ANYTHING fabric that we are going to use around the house - whether it's a new couch/chair, mattress - I always use Scotchguard to protect. Even new tennis shoes! (no paid ad here folks, it's just the truth!)

Quarterly projects

At this time of the year, I have a couple of "quarterly" upkeeping that I do. The first one is to clean my dryer filter. I've made it a habit to clean mine about every four months, using a soft brush, warm water, and some dish soap. If you want to know if your dryer filter is dirty - just take it to the sink and run water on it. If the water puddles up and doesn't run through, then it needs cleaned. The "waxy" substance on our dryer sheets sticks to the filter, and keeps the air from being able to move through like it should. It helps to make our dryer run more efficiently, and does a better job in shorter time, in some instances.

The other thing I do quarterly, is add yeast to the septic tank. We've been in this house for 29 years this year, and I've done this since we moved in. About 15 years ago, we were doing some work (adding on), and had the yard torn up. My DH decided at that time since the yard was a mess anyway, that he would call in the "Honey Wagon" to clean out the septic tank. The "Honey Man" was impressed to find no solids in our septic tank at all. He advised that we should keep doing whatever we were doing, because it was working! My DH was impressed, since he always thought I was kinds "touched in the head" with the yeast thing. (go me!)

In the front cover of Martha Stewarts magazine, she has an organization calendar, and I've been using it to do the "extra stuff" that usually gets forgotten. Try it if you need motivation.

It's starting to look alot like Christmas! and it's about time!!!

I'm so slow in getting everything done this year. We are getting new windows - living room, dining room, and sun room, the 4 windows that I decorate trees in front of every year. BUT I didn't know when they were coming to install - so I've been patiently (really, I have!) waiting for them to come. Last week, I called them, and they said they were planning to come on December 22. Seriously? The 22nd? I asked very nicely if they could wait til January, and they were happy to do so. I went shopping and found these adorable little pears -CLEARANCE. Kinda got me in the mood.

Last year, one of the bloggers I follow (sorry, I forgot who- but if it was YOU - Thanks!) that showed how they display their Christmas cards. I thought, hmm... I have one of those, got it out and waaalaaa, love it.

Friends from California sent us a wreath, live, smells awesome! My DD#1, had the arrangement for working 5 years at her job, she brought it to share the weekend after my birthday, and kinda "forgot" to take it home. It sure takes a lot of water!

We have had snow a couple of times, but this weekend, the weather is in the upper 40's, so we were able to get the decorations outside done. I'm into wreaths this year (apparently).

Last, but never least, is decorating of the bridge. Icicle lights, greenery and a huge wreath, accent the 60' bridge quite well. It's especially pretty at night. Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful Christmas, and blessed new year. Sandi

Homemaker Link Up Weekend

As I sit here at the lake house, I have SO many things that I should be doing! We will have our Thanksgiving meal tomomorrow, but the cooking can't begin til later this afternoon. Now I know, it's like the WORST thing a blogger can do, but I don't have a camera here. I'm thinking about buying one to just leave here, cause I keep forgetting to bring mine. Oh well. I'm going to post a few photos of some of the changes I've made since we got here in June. Definitely Homemaker stuff!

When we bought this house, it had been owned by an elderly couple. I'm sure the 80's decor didn't bother them, but it is driving me CRAZY! Above, you will see the built in hutch/buffet in the (?) dining area. (The question mark is because I don't actually call a 6'x6' area a dining area, but that's what its supposed to be.) Anyway!.....They had added these shelves and when we viewed the house, it had a coffee mug collection on it. Oh dear..... I'm not into mirrors, at all - and my DH didn't want to try to take it down because it might make a mess of the wall, so ....

below is what I did.

I removed the shelves, made a black board out of the mirror, AND removed the fake stuff on the glass. The only down side is that I have to keep it nice and clean on the inside now, but I can handle that. I like it SO much better.

Vintage Thursday

This childs toy was given to DD#1 when she was 3, she loved it - and spent a lot of time taking her babies in and out. I was tickled that she nor her little sister ever got in it and broke the bottom or sides out - however tempted I'm sure they were!
It originally belonged to my step sister Kim. She was in High School, and no longer wanted it, so Dad and Lois reglued and fixed it up, Lois made linens for it, and gave it to Angie for Christmas. My Dad died the next Christmas, and we have always cherished something that he spent time working on for her.
Angie has no girls, and decided that she didn't need it kept for her anymore. We've had it in storage all this time. I pulled it out a couple of weeks ago and reglued it. My step sister Kim, just had her first Grandchild this past summer, and even if it's a boy, I'm SURE she's going to be tickled to get it back. I was tickled to give it to her.
I suppose technically, it's an illegal bed - it has that dropped side that is such a no-no these days. Good thing it's only big enough for dolls - hope none of them get hurt!

The little deer is SO cute! I remember when baby beds had this kind of sticker (?) on them.

Another reason I'm kinda busy

How truly amazing life is. When we started dating in 1972, I never dreamed in a million years

that my life would take me down the roads it has. I was a Sr. in High School, and all my friends were planning to go to college, technical school, etc. But I kept telling everyone I just wanted to get married and have a family. The problem was at that time - I didn't even have a boyfriend. On December 31, 1971, I was invited to a New Years party, with anticipation that there were going to be some "available guys there". As it turned out, there was only one - my DH now. We met that night, at 15 minutes til midnight. 6 Weeks later, we were engaged, and 6 months later to the day - we were married.

I'd like to introduce the newest member to our family - Julia Catherine. We made a quick trip to see her the day she was born (a 5 hour drive).
Here's papa with Grand #8, and Grand daughter #4. We were blessed with 4 healthy boys - and lately 4 healthy girls. Our cup runneth over, we are truly blessed. Have a wonderful weekend. Sandi

Metamorphosis Monday - Adirondack Chairs that I love

Last year while vacationing in Missouri at Lake of the Ozarks, we say Adirondacks everywhere. Not for me, I thought, they don't look comfortable. Well, boy was I wrong! I fell in love with the one below - but not to the tune of $350.00. I'm not saying it wasn't worth it. They were hand painted, and had 3 coats of paint, plus a sealer on them. I'm sure there was a lot of work that went into them. I knew I wanted one "someday".

Then we bought a new Lake house, and I knew I had to have my OWN Adirondacks. They were $59.95 each at Ace - and the footstool that went with them - $29.95. Ouch! But okay. The day before I was going to go get some, I got a flier from Ace. OMG! They are $29.95 and $9.95. I went in right away, and they only had one in the box.....

Oh boy, DH is so happy with me right now............................................

The only other one they had was already put together!!YeHaw!

This the special mixture the made for primer. Totally cute!

I thought about leaving them pink, for a little bit, but then painted them red. I love the way you can have your paint match exactly what you want these days. Just a little scan, and badum bump! It works! The photo above doesn't even look red, does it, hmmmmm......

They are pretty happy in their new home. My DH and I sat down and enjoyed them after taking the photos.

We have been so busy between home and our new lake home - then throw in the fact that we haven't signed over the OLD lake home and it even gets more confusing! We love the new house though, and as well as the new location. It's so handy to just pull the boat up on the beach and run up to the house. I'm sharing a few photos, hope you enjoy! Here's the view from the living room. Those rosey drapes on the left are GONE now!

This is top of some of the kitchen cabinets - I have plans for this area, but haven't decided yet about paint vs. wall paper up here.

We recently purchased a 2nd lake home. We will be selling our other one before the end of summer. This new home is withing 1 hour of 2 of our kids and 1 1/1 hours of the 3rd one. I haven't been blogging lately, because I've been busy cleaning out - and packing to fit another house in to our lives! Pink Saturday - my new gloves

I haven't participated in Pink Saturday for awhile - things have been quite hectic.

One of the things we've had going on, is truly amazing. Last Labor Day, we came

home from the lake - as usual. My DH arrived home before I did, and I was surprised to see he was talking on the phone. Let me tell you - he RARELY talks on the phone, but he was truly engrossed in this conversation. Giving details about our life - how many kids, grandchildren, etc., etc. I was puzzled, but went about unpacking from the 3 day weekend.

When he got off the phone, he came into the house and was very quiet. He came to me and in a very quiet voice said, "That was one of the guys I was in Vietnam with. He tracked me down."

I have to tell you I was shocked. It had been 40 years since these boys had served together, and never had we heard a word from anyone. My husband is not good with names, and the few times we talked about it, he couldn't remember enough about anyone to do any looking. And frankly, he wasn't that anxious to do so. But, thanks to William DeMusey, that is all changed now. The men in the 3/17th Air Calvery, 1969-1970, no longer have to wonder. They have been able to contact all but one of the men - (no one can remember his first name - he was Sargent *). They lost 3 in the 13 months they served, and 7 have passed since then. I can't explain the roller coaster of emotions that we've experienced since then. But, 2 weeks ago, we met with 2 of the men. Spent 4 days with one of them, then joined with another for 2 more days. Listening to these guys talk about their experience, was an eye opener for me. I think the thing that got me more than anything was - they were only 17 and 18 years old, mere children. The responsibility these boys were given is astounding, embarassing, horrifying. Yes, when I was that age, I thought I was grown up - mature - even got married at 17. But, to think the our Grandson is only 2 years away from that, freaks me out. I am so humbled at their sacrifice.

We had a wonderful time, and can't wait to meet up with even more of the men, on down the road.

I was in tears when I saw what the monument said, as we walked up. This could not have been more perfect for these men. How proud us 3 wives are of them.
After spending some time together we found out that we all shared an

interest - in antiques! So, off we went to find the nearest

antique store. And look what I found!

I spotted them across the less than crowded room.
They called to me quietly at first, but the cry quickly grew.

I'm looking for a sundress to go with my new pink gloves, I'm going to wear a hat and the gloves - to church!
I have them lying on a table, along with my gloves I wore to my Sr. prom. They have the perfect pearly button decorations on the wrist.

One of my planned projects

We have a strawberry patch that provides ample sweets for the whole year. So, I when looking through the freezer the other day, I realized I better get ready for another June of fresh berries. I found enough strawberries from last year that I made 21 jars of strawberry jam today. Mmmm! I had to try some and it was just as good as it looks. Ha! Thanks for stopping by! Sandi

Vintage Thingie Thursday

When my Mom and Dad were married in 1954

my Grandma Alley painted a wedding plate for them.

I just love the lady and gentleman on this plate!

The next one, would be me - when I was born. The plate had a spot of rust on it

when I got it out this time, and I got most of it off - but not all.

Then, when I was married, I got the one below. I cherish it, mainly because I don't think

she made them for anyone else in the family.

I wish she'd continued on, and made them for our kids too. I also wish I were talented enough to make them for my Grands - but I don't think my Grands are going to get attached to "things" quite like I do! Ha! We found this on the curb at a local city's "junk weekend". It's a weekend when people are allowed to put ANYTHING on the curb, and the city will dispose of it for them. We usually are able to find 2 or 3 things that we just can't live without -and this year was no dissappointment!

Its a pillow challenge!

I made a little tooth fairy pillow for a very special couple who are going to be first time Mom and Dad - very soon! Mom (to be) is a dental hygienest (or however it's spelled) and I thought this would be so great! It's made from the Dad (to be)'s Great Grandmothers pillow case.

it definitely needed a little pouch for the tooth! And the edge of the pillow case had the perfect little scallops.

the detail is amazing!

Vintage Pillowcases, turned in to Tooth Fairy Pillows

Looking for a unique baby gift is hard for some people. This young couple seems to have everything already! I had thought I'd make a baptismal bonnet like I did for my kids, but when I contacted one of the grandma's she said they had one. She volunteered to send me some of the new Dad's, grandmother's, embroidered pillow cases. I decided since the new Mom is a dental hygienist, I would make a Tooth Fairy Pillow out of one. Then she sent 2 pillow cases, so I could make one for Emma too - since their Daddies are like - BEST FRIENDS! She sent the pillow cases this past week, so today (Sunday) I got to work.

Just picking which one to use was hard - they were all wonderful! Even the inside of these pillow cases are amazing!

The detail work is just awesome! They aren't "fairies" but they could be! So, this the one I chose. Plus, there were 2 of them, so I made Emma's just like the new Babies.

It just makes me cringe when I cut up these pretties!

The little tooth pouch is made from the back of the case, using that delicious edge as the flap.

They turned out wonderfully, and I think the recipients will be pleased. I apparently don't have any stuffing in the house, so tomorrow I will finish these up. It took less than an hour to do them both, very easy!

Some fabulous Thrifty Finds!!!

I got this pile of treasures from the UMW (United Methodist Women) Thrift Shop on Friday.

The white tablecloth had never been washed, the white napkins were pretty dingy, so they are soaking. The vintage tablecloth is in PERFECT condition. And I don't think I have one of this pattern.

The napkins have NEVER been used - or at least never washed - you can tell from the tag.

So as we speak - they are soaking in Oxyclean.

These are Pier I placemats - label $3.00 each, I got them 4/$2.00!

Flaunt it Friday

For Christmas this year, I made everyone in the family -kids, Grands, and In Laws- aprons. They are all black/white checked, with a different colored pocket for each family. I try to get one gift every year that ALL the families get.

Emma was all for posin' at Christmas! Greta is wondering what all the fuss is about!

I decided to have a booth this fall at the Highway 36 Treasure Hunt. I'm making aprons to sell. Brady was here for Spring Break, and modeled one of the ones that I thought could be either boy or girl. This one has a matching adult apron, so if someone wants one matching - they can get it. I'm not making a ton of money on these, mostly just enjoying the whole thing! When I redid my Mom cave last year, I PROMISED my DH that I would use up a lot of the fabric in my closet. SO, I'm using all my remnants to make the aprons. They are $15.00 for adults, and $10.00 for the kids. So far I've made 10 kids, and 4 adults. I've only just begun!

There are no two alike. They are all handmade by me, and are very special.

I'm thinking this one can be boy OR girl - it has bugs on it! My Grandsons wear their aprons that I made for Christmas, and love them.

It's Maude and another Vintage Friday!

Maude is one of my favorite decorations in my home. She is in our sunroom/dining area off the kitchen.
Today, she held still while I put on one of my collars off my bargain basement sweaters.
I very nearly bought a fur coat in an antique store a couple of weeks ago. It's was on sale.
If its still on sale when I go back in April - it's Maudes......

Maude, today embodies the very being of me. If I were every to put together a photo that said "me" without my photo on, this is it. All the things I love are here. The Victorian style necklace just is ME. The cross necklace signifies my love of Jesus Christ. The heart necklace is a memory of a day I spent with my favorite people - my 2 daughters and my best friend, Yvonne. We went to see Oprah - and this was one of the giveaways.
The family tie that Maude is, because she came from my Mom. The softness from the collar.

The love all of things vintage, and old is in the apron, and Maude.

Maude is sporting one of my vintage aprons in a deep purple floral print.
This apron has built in hot pads on the sides. but, I'll show those in another post.

Cinnabon Brunch Tablescape Thursday And Cloche Party!

I'm having some muffins and coffee, wanta sit down?
I'm using my new candelabra, with a little lace drape.
I finally found little cloche's to use for muffins, or desserts.

I have plenty of room, have a seat!

It's just dripping with delish!

I just layered on the lace tablecloths, and then added a few touches.

MMMMMM~!

I like coffee. Plain. Black. Hot. period.

I just love these fake ice cubes! They don't make the glass dirty,

don't melt while I'm taking photos.....

I LOVE the way the chandelier above the table AND the candelabra are

reflected in the spoon.

Just pulled a few items out of the closet to make up the most recent Mantle decor.

3 Of the ceiling tiles out of the old bank that my DH crawled up and pulled down.

My new candelabra that DH recently painted white for me.

A few books with the paper covers removed.

A rose topiary that I've had for awhile.

A garden statue of an adorable child.

And a pretty flowered runner with roses on it. Looks good to me!

Pink Saturday with my Doll

This little pink dress was mine when I was little. I remember so well when my Mom was making it. I was excited because it was going to have this beautiful collar on it. I would sit

beside the sewing machine on the floor and hold the collar in my lap while Mom sewed.

I don't remember being poor. I remember having anything I wanted, I guess I just didn't want much. Most of my pretty dresses (including this one) were made from dresses that Mom got from other people. She would tear them up and use the fabric for us girls. We had beautiful clothes. And I remember thinking how awesome it was that my dress was made out of a PROM dress! This fabric is very satiny.

This sweet little belt that ties in the back. And it made me feel pretty to wear it.

When I got this doll, her hair was a mess! It was straight and icky looking. One night I put her head over the sink and washed it, just like it was a real person. Then, I sat on the couch, with her standing between my legs and one by one I roller her hair in perm rods. They were the only thing I had that was little enough to go in the hair. I trimmed the ends first, so the hair was all one length. Then, I left it - for WEEKS. I'm tickled that it still looks so good after all these years, cause it was a LOT of work - and I really wouldn't want to have to do it very often!

This doll belonged to my Grandma Alley. She is a walking doll. I never had a doll like this, and when she gave her to me, I wondered what in the world I would do with her. Now we know, huh?

Vintage Thingie - an important job!

Long story short - for my 50th birthday my DH brought home a brand new 4 wheeler for me. It will do 65 mph (like I would do that) and is a lot of fun. One of my favorite things to do on a nice day is to grab my camera and take off into the countryside. These are the photos from one afternoon.

I stopped at a farm where there is an elderly lady and her daughter living. When I asked if they still had an outhouse, I was told "Yep, we each got one". Well, well, they weren't kidding me! They do have an indoor toilet but when they are out working in the yard, garden, field, etc., it's easier to just use these. The one on the right is Mom's, the one on the left if the daughters. I kid you not!

I thought this one was probably used as a garden shed, because it was painted so nice, but...

when I opened the door - NOPE! It's still the little house out back!

This one looks kinda lonely - no house, no barn - just the outhouse.

Now you gotta admit, these little houses had an IMPORTANT job! Aren't they cute? When I got home, I told my husband that I was going to write a book and title it "The Outhouses of Phillips County". There went my 15 minutes of fame and my chance to be a millionaire - cause I never did. I did blow these up though and framed them to hang on the bathroom wall at our Lake House. Cheap, fun decor!

Metamorphosis Monday - Jacket

Last weekend we went to KC to visit kids. On Saturday, we decided to take a road trip to Paola, to a German restraunt. The food was spectacular - and well worth the trip. Attached to the eating place, there was a little boutique that had some high-end treasures. The above jacket (apologize for the fuzzy photo) was regularly $85, marked down to $58. I was in LOVE, but it was a little more than I wanted to pay. Especially since I had an idea that I could make one. Around the neck was the crinkly fabric, with 2 little self fabric lapel tabs. This jacket had 2 silk mums attached on one of the label tabs. So.... when I got home.... this is what I did......

I got this jacket out of LTD last fall. They came 2 for I think $11.00. There's a brown and a pink one. They are made out of single knit, and had these LONG tails on the front. I love that new style - BUT I'm only 5' tall. Consequently, they hung below my knees. BEFORE we went to KC, I had cut the tails off, and left the jacket hang. Not sure what I wanted to do next.

A couple of months back, Mom gave me a remnant - saying "I don't know what you will do with this, but thought you'd use it for something! It's the exact same color as the fabric on the jacket.

In order to sew with this crinkly stuff, first you have to iron our the crinkles. If you don't the cut won't be even, and it's hard to handle. I cut 2 strips (because the remnant wasn't very long) 6" wide.

I sewed together the two strips to make one long one, and zig zagged the seam, because I didn't know how much ravel there would be.

I took 2 pieces of the scraps I'd cut off earlier, and made my little lapel tabs, and sewed the crinkly fabric, right sides together on the machine. I didn't want any evidence that the piece had been added, so I turned it, and sewed it on the back side - by hand.

When done, all that was left was to we down the crinkly fabric and scrunch it together again. It goes right back to the way it was - easy peasy!

Everyone needs a little "bling" once in awhile! Diamonds go with everything, right? I wasn't too sure about the silk flowers, they looked kinda cheap to me, so decided to use a pin. I have a sunflower pin that I'll use too, but this way I can change with what I'm wearing.

The finished projoct - waiting for me to wear it to church tomorrow. I think it will look good dressed up or down. I will probably wear it more with jeans than anything! And it cost all of $6.00 I paid to begin with and a little elbow grease!

White Wednesday & Tablescape Thursday

I had an inspiration when it was snowing. So, I came up with these branches, with my crocheted snowflakes.

I used my blue glasses from my hope chest. Free in laundry soap in the 60's.

I bought this vase years ago as a Christmas gift, but my son broke up with the girl before I gave it to her.....ugh! I love the vase though!

The silverware was one of my first Mother's Day gifts from DH. It's Oneida, and it is like

new yet. It only gets used for tablescapes AND holidays!

Pretty crocheted snowflakes. Had them forever......

I used my clearance medium blue napkins and silver chargers.

The dishes are Dollar General, close outs. $.75 each. I bought a 4 piece setting for a grab bag gift, then took my own gift. Oops, the cats out of the bag!

I got these cute little sleds through the mail, on closeout. I knew they would go great

with snowflakes and snowmen. And they make a great little napkin ring!

Oh wow! There's a little bird nest in the limbs! How sweet! I makes a cute header, doesn't it?

I love the 3 tiered server. It's pressed aluminum. I paid $11.00 for it - half price. Then I found the one thing I've looked for - a candelabra. Half price - $24.00. Yipee!

My DH thinks I've totally lost my mind, but I'm painting it. I don't like the brass, it doesn't go with anything I have. I have to have it painted - white. Or, maybe black. Hmmmm......

Tablescape Thursday with Moms Jewel Tea

Chances are, if you go to auctions at all in this area, you will see these dishes. They are fairly easy to find in antique stores, thrift stores, any place you find collectibles. My Mom has been gracious enough to let me do a little interview about these dishes, and I
am sharing it with you all.

Barbara K., aka Mom, is a dish enthusiast with a passion for Jewel Tea dishes. She is married to Verle, who is her partner in crime, when searching for these treasures. Below
is my interview with her about her dishes, in her words.

My Mom (Grandma Alley) had this dinnerware and we used it daily. Of course we were to be careful with it. I have a milk pitcher, a plate, a custard dish, and pepper and salt set that were hers. Moms’ salt shaker was cracked but I found one that was not, so now I have a set that is not cracked.

The others I have collected over the past 2 years. When we were coming home from our grandson’s wedding in Minnesota, (somewhere in South Dakota) Verle found a tray to finish my tea set. It was WAY more than I wanted to pay. After talking the owner down in price, he had to go back over the three floors of the antique shop to find it. Even the owner had no idea where it was in the store.

I had wanted a glass tray for YEARS, and they are valued at $180, so was really waiting for the right price. I found one in Russell Ks antique shop for $35 and did not even try to talk them down! But that day if you spent over $25, you got a 10% discount, so I got it for the right price.

I have a full set of 8 dinner plates and cups and saucers also Verle found at Downs Ks., at a great price.

There are also accessories(?) such as these playing cards that go with these dishes. I have 2 decks, one is complete. When I went to purchase the other deck, the man at the store had a fit that I wanted them, because it wasn’t a complete deck.

I still need a cookie jar, having found one in Ellis, Ks. Once, but it was gone when I went back after it. From that, I learned to have things set it aside while I think and am still in the store.

Some of the pieces were produced again in the 80's so I have to be careful to check the stamp to make sure they are the older ones. Verle is good at remembering and finding the pieces I still need, so I know if there are any out there – we’ll get them!

I hope you enjoyed my interview today. Mom and Verle will continue to be on the lookout for the above pieces she mentioned.

Addendum on Sunday February 20 - went to a "going out of business" sale at an antique store yesterday - saw some of these dishes - average price $49.00 before 1/2 price! Wow, what a great collection Mom!

White Wednesday - Ceiling painting

I had planned 7 projects to complete, starting at the beginning of January. This is project 5/7, Painting my ceiling in my sunroom. I had noticed the spots, but I thought they were shadows. You know how it is, you see it every day, so it's not there kinda thing. Well, they weren't, they were dirt. Plain old greasy dirt. DD#2, made the comment at Christmas "Mom, you need to wash your ceiling"! First, I tried to brush it with a broom, but that didn't even budge it. Next, I tried Windex All Purpose, and it just streaked. So, I had to resort to paint. Ha! I set a date to do it, and DH was scheduled to help with 2 pieces of furniture that I couldn't lift by myself, and the taping.

DH bought a plastic tarp for $6.00 at Orschelin's. That way I didn't have to come

up with paper to cover the carpet.

My DH did all the taping, I will take no credit. I'm 5' tall. Taping is an issue for me!

This is what it was doing while I was painting. We got 12" that day - one week ago today. You wouldn't know it now, the snow is all melted already. It's been in the 40's and 50's and higher for the past 4 days, and supposed to last another 2-3! Yipee!

It took 3 coats of paint to cover. The old color was a nice creamy color that matched the wallpaper. This is WHITE, cheap, latex, no nonsense WHITE. This photo was taken with no flash. Can you tell how clean and reflective it is? It's so nice!

The adorable "Pretty Handy Girl" gave some great advice a couple of weeks ago. I was able to get my ceiling done, with much help from her suggested "edger". I've painted a lot of ceilings through the years, but never has it been done with this simple helper. I high advise you purchase one, they are cheap, and easy to clean. Tabletop Tuesday with birds and Maude

This is my "valentine", "Winter", whatever, buffet in our eat-in kitchen area. I love to

add holiday decor in this area, and of course "Maude" is always dressed in her best apron to match.

I'm loving the vintage tablecloth, and how it has red and pink roses, as well as the grey, same as Maudes apron.

The runner is red and green plaid, which are more Christmas, but the sparklish birds, and

tree branch seem kinda winterish to me. I had to have the gold glittered tree limb when I saw it, it was $12.00.

I found the birds on Christmas Closeout, for $1.00 each.

Metamorphosis Monday-T Shirt blanket

I’ve shown you before what I do with all the sourvenier t-shirts that we seen to
accumulate at our house. I make t-shirt quilts/blankets out of them. I just got
another one done and wanted to share again how easy it is!

Using a 12” square template, I lay it on the t-shirt, positioning it so the design is
Included as much as possible. Sometimes this means not horizontally, I’ve even placed them on an angle. (Just takes a little more care when sewing) I have chose to use the biggest design on the front of my blanket, so sometimes that the back of the shirt.
Sometimes there’s a small design (such as in the upper left front) and I try to make sure that it’s included. That give the back of the blanket a little fun too.

I save t-shirts for a year or so, because many of them we do wear for awhile. Then, when I get at least 16-20 saved, I put them together out on the floor to make some kind of a design.

This time, I didn’t add any stuffing, but last time I did. I sew them together, as they were laid out.

These blankets/throws make for a lot of fun and conversation. A lot of memories from events we’ve gone to and enjoyed, or participated in. (Suh

We use these throws at our cabin at the lake, for cool evenings on the deck. They wash up wonderfully, and are not so “precious” that we are afraid to use them.

Ok, so I admit it. I shop at the Thrift Store, and I always check out the “Free” box.
Sometimes I come upon just the littlest thing that needs my “love”, and take it home.

Today I’m showing you how just some small changes can make a big difference.
I found this adorable little, 14” tall, wooden snowperson. The ribbon was smashed,

buttons missing.

Just needs a little TLC. So I get out the trusty glue gun, and curling iron.

After a couple of new buttons, straightening of the “scarf”, and adding a little “fringe”
detail, maybe 14 minutes of time…….

Pink Saturday

I found this in a box of stuff at an auction, gave a dollar for the whole box. It's ceramic, with roses on top. Has no markings, so I have no idea where it came from. It's in excellent condition, not a crack or chip on it. It's 6" x 4".

I put all kinds of things in it, and leave it on the desk top. It's too pretty to put up! Have a wonderful Pink Saturday! The Pink Saturday link is below.

It's a Vintage Thingie Thursday!

I drive by this barn everyday, so took my camera a few weeks back. I posted it on Facebook, and sold $100 worth of photo and note cards before the day was out. Worked out good for me!

The story is, when this barn was sold (every time) the new owner had to sign a paper saying that he would keep it painted. So, it's BRIGHT red. I turned it into b&w and left the wreath and ribbon colored. I removed a lot of wires, posts, etc. but think it turned out great.

Metamorphosis Monday - More of the Mom Cave

My metamorphosis this week is quick and simple. I love the idea of a plate holder with frames, and since I have 3 kids with families, it's perfect for their family photos. Problem is = I don't have anywhere to hang something with this style/pattern.

I can't remember where I got them, but they are a sturdy product, and everything hangs right, etc., so I need to MAKE them work for me!

They are cute, but too cutesy for me. To make them work in my room, they have to have a coat of spray paint and a little love!

I love the way this turned out, and can't believe for 99 cents for the can of black paint, and a wonderful husband to do the work - I got the best result.

Outdoor Wednesday - Cancun Vacation 2010

It took a little bit, because some of the members our group got to get "personal" with the TSA at the airport!

But we were happy to be out of the cold and wet, and into the warm and balmy weather of Cancun. We had never been to Cancun, and were really looking forward to it. Our resort that had been chosen 1 year before - caught fire 2 weeks before our arrival, so we were moved to a different one. One that was new, under 6 weeks since it's opening. We even enjoyed some of the funky things along the highway on the way to the resort.

We spent a lot of time at the pool, which was beach-side.

Sparkles like diamonds!

I noted that the color of the water is different on this side of Mexico than on the west side. I think the water is more turquoise on this side.

The landscaping and buildings were beautiful. Instead of a room, we each had a condo of our own, with either one or two bedrooms, two or three bathrooms, living/dining room and kitchen. We spent 5 days enjoying the sun and fun, the first week of December (my birthday!).

On our last morning, this is the little guy that watched us eat our breakfast, in the dining room. He's really intent in looking me over, as I am him! The waiting staff said it was a Spider Monkey.

Vintage Thingie Thursday - Final Day for "If this Secretary could talk"!

Well, here I am, my last little bit of history to give you. There have been so many changes through the years.

The computer is one of the main modes of communication these days, with cell phones being a close second, and mail being a FAR 3rd.

Eye glasses are used less, with most people using contact lenses or even laser surgery for eye correction needs.

Music, that was once only able to be shared through a record player, then tape players, and now CD or on the computer, as changed as much as anything else. The records that we played in the 50's and on, are now available for download on our computers. Where there were 10 songs or so available on a 33rpm back then, the IPOD can hold thousands, and is as small as a pack of Dentyne gum was back then.

Photos, that were once very rare, are now available in all shapes and sizes, color or black and white. They are taken with cameras that can store thousands, or print on the spot. They are found on telephones, computers, electronic frames, and many, many other places. Note from Sandi: Thanks for stopping by for this last installment of "If this Secretary Could Talk". It's been fun to look back through the years and see the changes that have occurred.

Vintage Thingie Thursday - The Secretary is in- the 70's this week!

Hello again this week! This is Sandi's secretary talking, and I'm so glad you stopped by. I've had a great time looking back at the good ole' days, and hope you have too. This week, we've stopped in the 70's for a little while.

The 70's are calmer than the 60's were, women no longer burn their bras, but bikini underwear is in style. Bikini bathing suits are not "string", they are like underwear these days (and she doesn't mean thongs!) Everyone is wearing bell bottom pants and platform shoes, "Make Peace, Not War" is the general feeling overall. Sandi is one of the first young person in her town to have wire rimmed glasses (like John Lennon) and so everyone thinks she's in to drugs.

I sit in the 70's, used for holding the phone, typewriter, and some momentos from high school. I'm starting to show quite a bit of wear, with one hinge sprung terrible and hanging pretty cockeyed. On the desktop, you see Sandi's letter from music - lettered all 4 years - AND her pep club letter - all 4 years.

Telephones are rotary dial now, no more operator needed to complete your call UNLESS you are calling long distance. In the small town that I live in, the phone will only work for 3 minutes, then shuts off automatically. If you want to continue a conversation - you have to call back. It is quite a deterent for teenage LONG conversations! Phones come in black, white, pink, and turquoise. Odd combination of colors, but I'm not the one who makes those decisions!

Sandi has taken typing classes in high school and is able to type 82 wpm (words per minute) on a manual typewriter, and 132 on an electric. Typing is not a required class, and there are only a few boys who are in the class. Sandi's home typewriter was recently purchased for $90.00 from a general store in a nearby town. She saved money from many paychecks to purchase this.

The typewriter types in black and red - with only one font.

Sandi is known in High School as the girl who ALWAYS has a camera, and ALWAYS takes a ton of photos! She uses 110 film, and sends through the mail to have them printed. Sometimes it takes up to a month to get them back. BUT recently she's purchased a Polaroid Camera that prints photos like above. They are great because you get your photo right away, AND have a place on the bottom to write on. What a great invention!

Sr. pictures are done in a nearby town also. There are 8 poses, all black and white - with no clothing change. If you want color, they take the photo and hand paint the sweater whatever color you want, and the lady who does it has to know what color your eyes and hair are. It costs $90.00 for a dozen 5x7's, 1 8x10, and 1 dozen wallets. If you want more wallets, you just order them out of a magazine. 100 photos for $3.50. No copyright problems at all.

The young people all have bracelets or dog tags from someone they know OR a pen pal that they've been given because of the Vietnam War. Everyone knows someone who is fighting in the war, most know someone who was killed in the war.

and then it was gone! Just as quickly as it came! I think it was the mix of the candle light and natural light. I SWEAR I did not change balls. (Can I say that?)

This is the buffet arrangement I had over the holiday. The picture is a photo I took of the back of a sunflower, had it printed in sepia. It's awesome. Quilt Mosaic

It's the time of year when we bring out the heavy blankets, so I made a mosaic with photos of 3 of my many quilts!

The following poem is entitled Appreciation

There are quilts that make me wonder.

There are quilts that make me blink.

There are quilts that tug my heartstrings.

There are quilts that make me think.

But the quilts that mean the most

And fill my heart with glee

Aren't the ones I see at quilt shows

But the rare ones made for me!

The quilt on the left was one that when my Grandmother passed away - we found the pieces and I finished the top and had it quilted. The one in the middle is one that I got on clearance at JC Penney, and the one on the right is one I made when we had a snow storm and I was snowed in for 5 days!

Not your typical Thanksgiving Table!

We are not having our turkey meal until Friday night, so this is what we had for Thanksgiving. One of our kids and her family were able to come for supper, so we had a soup and sandwich meal tonight. Tomorrow night will be the turkey meal, so I have one for next week!

Lovin' this blue turkey. I've had it forever! I was one of those who decorated with blue years ago, so this is left over from then.

Silver chargers, white Gibson Dishes, silverware I've had forever.

Since I only have 4 blue napkins, I had to substitute with a couple of white ones.

Even the back of the turkey is full and fluffy.

I got these candle holders at an garage sale for $1.00 for 3 of them, I'm only using two tonight.

I bought this tablerunner years ago when my whole house was done in blues. Wow, that was awhile ago - thank goodness!

I love the swirly textures that are shared by the plates, the glassware and if you look in the reflexion in the stem - there's swirls in the table runner also.

Vintage Thingie Thursday, The Secretary Speaks Again

Hello again from Sandi's Secretary! I'm going to talk a little about the 50's this week. Boy what a busy time it was! Sandi's parents were married in 1954 and had their baby girl (Sandi) later that same year. In 1958, they welcomed a baby sister (Susan) to the family.

A milk glass lamp would have been used to illuminate my desktop, and a hand crocheted doily to adorn it. Sandi's grandmother (my first owner) was incredibly skilled in many kinds of craft, including crocheting, knitting, painting, sketching, sewing, tatting, and many - MANY - others.

This awesome 50's bracelet is in excellent condition, and one that Sandi wears frequently. It has huge faux pearls, and is very detailed.

This is a photo of Sandi's Mom and Dad on their wedding day.

Communication was primarily by the written word, with ink pens being the primary way to write. Pencils were still very important at this time. Typewriters were used for big projects, and some have home versions - but not everyone.

The photo at the top is of Sandi's Dad when he returned from Japan in the early 50's. In this area of Kansas, there are many small phone companies. It was very common for people to pool their money, and start their own phone company. The operator would sit in her office, and connect people manually. Sandi's family didn't have a phone for many years. Communication for them was by way of 2-way radio. Much like truck drivers use today.

On the doily, is a daisy barrett that Sandi wore in her hair as a child. She loves daisies to this day, and even had them as her wedding flower!

Vintage Thingie Thursday

I have lived with Sandi for about 8 years. I belonged to her Grandmother, then to her mother. I was used for many different things and have seen many different times. This is a diary of some of the things I've seen.

I don't know how old I am, I have lived in many lovely homes. I'm not made out of fancy wood, and have lived a very simple life.

In the early part of the 20th century communication was by hand written letters. The mail was carried by horse and rider.

An oil lamp would have provided light for the desk. Few accessories were needed, as

times were hard and "things" weren't important.

A pair of wire rim glasses would be used.

A photo of the lady and her soldier would adorn my desktop.

A feather pen would have been appropriate for the time. The lady would write to her soldier if he is away fighting in a war.

(( This piece of jewelry belonged to my Step Dad's mother. It has a hand made clasp on the back and a large pink jewel in the middle. It's not shiney gold, but rather a dusky gold (is that a color?) It is well over 100 years old. ))

This is the Veteran's Day table I did this week. I honor my father, husband, and son, who are all Veteran's of this great land of ours. My Dad served in Japan in the early 50's, my husband in Vietnam 69-70 and my son on the USS Mt Vernon from 92-96.

This candle is lit in honor of the many men and women who have given their life for us. God Bless them and their families today and forever.

White Wednesday

My Aunt was going through things to have an auction, earlier this Spring. She came across these two little dresses, and thought I might like them. One of them was marked with a magic marker, on the BACK of the dress "grandma's baby dress". We won't ever know which Grandma they were talking about, but I didn't care! I brought them home and soaked them for 4 days in Oxiclean, changing the water frequently. It was SO gross and smelly! But they turned out real nice.

The long one has such details - the cuffs of the sleeves are pleated. The short one has an intricate eyelet lace that trims it. They were both sewn on machine and HAND stitched in some placec.

Buttonholes are by hand on both of them.

The short one is very flared in the skirt. Kinda reminds me more of a slip than a dress. Would have been perfect under a little apron. It buttons all the way down the back, and the buttons are gone. :(

The white dress is cotton, and the long dress is a scratchy fabric, almost like it has wool in it. Maybe is even flour sack material? Don't know, never will I suppose.

One of my mostest favoritest things in the whole wide world if vintage PHOTOS!!

When my Grandma Alley died, I got tubs full of negatives. The train is one I had printed. No idea where it's taken, or what train it was - let alone what year.

Here I am sitting on Daddy's 50 Studebaker. I don't ever remember riding in it, although it was always in the family until my Uncle's auction last month. (Mom said Dad didn't want me to get it dirty!)He bought it from my Dad right before he died. It had less than 50,000 miles on it, and sold for $4,400. Love this photo - look at my skirt! What colors do you think it was? Hmmm..... Mom, can you clarify that?

Here I am swinging, and over my shoulder is our home. Yes, it was our home. We lived there til I was 5, I believe. Mom, Dad, Me, and baby sister, Susan.

I'm on the left - with the cowboy boots. The story is, if I couldn't wear my boots - I wouldn't go! Kinda funny, because I have a grand daughter who LOVES her new cowboy boots!

This photo shows my Uncle Harold (who recently passed), my Mom and Dad. My uncle owned the gas station, and my Dad worked for him ALL HIS LIFE, 60-80 hours a day and FAR from minimum wage, no benefits, but it was a job. What would happen today if we had to do that?

Mom Cave Monday

I have done several Met Monday posts on the renovations of my Mom Cave. I didn't know that was the name of it though, until I decided to do this post! This room previously, was an unuseable area, just because of the lack of organizion. I hired a professional organizer to come in and design what I needed, and took a giant leap forward to the below results. I sometimes just walk in there, look around and LEAVE!

This is the sewing station. The drawers to the right hold everything I need at the sewing machine. Threads, bobbins, scissors, extra pair of bifocal's - you name it. To the right, is the below cabinet.

Look at this cabinet! Full of fabrics, piled in colors, love, love, love it!

This is my scrapbook station. It also serves as a great place to put my tabletop ironing board while I'm sewing, so I can sew, and press, all withing easy reach.

This drawer is awesome! It's deep, it's wide, it shallow, so it holds all the things I need for a scrapbook project. As you can see, it's full. So, I need to get busy!

This is the bill paying station. Complete with everything within reach to pay bills. Checkbook, envelopes, stamps, address labels, computer, pens/pencils, and a calendar. It almost makes it fun!

This is my computer station, where I archive, print, or whatever I'm doing with photos. To the right (seen in the bottom right) is a bank of drawers with the storage as described below.

This drawer is for CD's, blank and full. Within easy reach when I'm blogging. Also, there's printer cartridges and about anything else I could need when archiving photos.

This drawer holds greeting cards, and those every loving address labels that come by the 100's at our house! Also, a small photo printer - what every photographer has to have.

A Spooktacular Tablescape!

I'm adding Vintage Thingie to my Tablescape post, since the skulls were made over 20 years ago in ceramic class, and the candelabra and dishes are old too. You have my apology if you've seen it twice! Thanks to the Colorado Lady for hosting! http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/

Today I's using my new dishes Mom got at a garage sale, the Highway 36 Sale (held the 3rd weekend in September along Highway 36). They are old, cream colored instead of white, with gold accents on the fluted edges. There is a complete set for 8, with some serving pieces.

I don't know why I chose the rust colored tablecloth, just didn't seem like I wanted black. I like the 3rd color though.

The stemware is some you've seen many times. I didn't light the candles. If you go back to photo #1, you will notice the cheesecloth decoration hanging from the light fixture. It's too close to actually light the candles.

There were enough saucers that I used one under each of the stemware also.

The skulls are ceramic, and supposed to have lights in them.

I got this candelabra at a garage sale for a dollar. I have always been tempted to paint it white. No more temptation after using it today. It definitely deserves to stay- as is!

Metamorphosis Monday

We found these two chairs sitting beside the dumpsters, at the lake. I just had to have them, knew that I'd find a place for them. Well, here we are 3 weeks later, and I realized I have JUST the place. As is, they are rather plain little chairs.

Little decorative element on the back there.

I'm thinking that sometime in the past, these chairs were quite nice.

Good bones, that's what I'm thinkin'.

They are quite dirty, so I want to replace the covers.

This one needs a little work, here.

And another place.

All stripped down, waiting for the next step.

Some sanding makes it a little more work.

I'm worried these lines are going to show after it's all done. But, I've steam pressed it, and just about everything else I can think of, and they still show. Oh well, the fabric was free -thanks Mom!

Removing all the staples takes a little bit. I hadn't planned to remove the padding, but after taking it apart, I just couldn't reuse it. Yucky! The old is gone!

The fabric will hopefully lose the lines after awhile.

4 Coats of black paint to make it look better!

If you remember, this chair needs some work. A bag of cement hold the joints together until the glue dries. The clamps we had just weren't big enough, so we had to come up with plan B.

A double bed mattress pad provides the padding for the new cushion. I just happened to have one in the closet!

In November, my DGD#2 is going to come and spend 5 days with us, so I

had a practice tea party. I wanted to make sure the little cakes tasted

as well as looked good, and I wanted to make sure everything fit

on the little table.

Time to dress my mantle for Halloween! I used a scrap piece of black velvet - that I left tattered and uneven.

Another of the ceramics that we made when we lived next to a ceramic shop. There's a huge stuffed spider on the lamp.

The mirror was a dollar, and DH painted it black for me. I got the webbing at the Dollar General store.

The rat came from Curious Sofa last weeken, and the candy dish was closeout Halloween 2 years ago. More closeouts for the pumpkins, my newest bargain is the single cupcake holder, and a skeleton candle.

Pink Saturday

On my list of things I want to do in my life - I had listed a visit to Curious Sofa in Prairie Village, Kansas. I had seen it in "Romantic Homes", and Better Homes and Gardens Holiday books. They are featured this fall in Better Homes and Garden's Halloween issue. Last weekend, I took my DIL and #1GD to see it and came away MORE than impressed! I highly recommend it - it is chock FULL of great stuff. I had to have a little package of my own, you know a few black crows and a rat. Oh yeah! and a copy of the special issure of Halloween Better Homes and Gardens magazine. They told me while I was there, that they will be featured in the Christmas one too!

This beautiful wreath certainly catches your eye when you walk in the door.

When you first walk in the door, there was this awesome ceramic planter full of "hands"! So awesome!

The entire ceiling of this business has such appeal! There are many different types of tin squares.

How about a curtain of sparkley, pokey things? Ha!

Look at the Chandi's, aren't they gorgeous?

These lanterns have old brown bottles in them, what a great idea!

And to think that 2 years ago, we sold 2 dozen sets of deer antlers on an auction, sure wish I'd kept one or two...........

I just about had a heart attack! An old chair springs - with candles in insulators. I just did a blog about my insulators a couple of months ago, and now they are worth HOW MUCH? hmmmmm

These two were such help, and willing to let me take photos, "as long as you promise to send in a lot of business!" I'm trying, I'm trying!

It took me 1/2 hour to realize these gorgeous lace panels had BATS on them!

This is where I got the idea for my web's on my windows. I'll show you mine next week!

Tablescape Thursday

Getting ready for a Happy Haaaalllooooweeennnn!!!

Mom gave me these absolutely awesome ghost napkin rings! I couldn't wait to use them.

My black flowered napkins just looked better than plain black. They have a leaf pattern on them, that could even look like webs or something, if you have a good imagination.

Of course, grandma's silverware is too perfect for a gothic table, then my Gibson white dishes serve as the charger this time. Next was my new set of black dinner plates, and a white soup bowl on top.

I got these martini glasses from my son and DIL for Christmas a couple of years ago. I love the white lines on them, and then as you will see later on down, there is a design in the glass that is like a ribbed look.

Years ago, the kids went to ceramic classes and made quite a few little ghosts and goblins. I've

used them around the metal bird cage that has kind of a gothic look to it.

Inside the bird cage, I sat the grim reaper. He looks creepy!

On Thursday a.m., I realized how pretty the sunrise was, so took along my camera on Friday a.m. It took me longer to get to work, but it was well worth it! Enjoy. So sorry I'm late posting today, I've been spending MAJOR Meme time!

And finally, the pink is gone, peach has taken over, and in the next 60 seconds the sun will be entirely up. I've gone 25 miles, stopping along the way, and as I say to myself every morning when I get up "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

I am enjoying having a mantle to decorate, so here's what I came up with for fall! Beaded pumpkins, a fall arrangement that I used a couple of weeks ago in my fall tablescape, and a fall photo that I got last spring on Junk Day in town. It was laying on the curb. Ha!
